Oil: Where Is The Global Demand?

I think the bigger problem is, where is the global demand? I think if the demand is contracting, it is because economies are slowing down. And I think this is going to include the United States.

Oil: The First Of Many Bubbles To Pop?

Most of the good jobs that have been created over the past few years were created in that sector. And now these jobs are at risk. And I think this is somewhere between the dot com bubble  and the housing bubble. I think it is bigger than dot com, smaller than housing. But again there were also positive effects of falling home prices because it made cheaper for people to buy houses. But there was a lot of debt that was accumulated and a lot of layoffs in the sector, so we are looking at the same  possibilities in the oil sector burt here is a bigger equation. If it turns out that oil was just a bubble created by cheap money, well what about the stock market? What about the housing market? What about the bond market? What if they are all bubbles? What if the oil bubble is just the first of many that are going to pop?

Lower Oil Prices Will Push The U.S. Economy Into Recession

Long term of course, it is always a good thing. Contrary to what Central Bankers and the economist are telling us, it is always a good thing when consumer prices fall. Even Janet Yellen acknowledged the benefits of lower gas prices. Well, the same thing applies to all prices.

But here is the problem. If it turns out that we had a bubble in the energy sector, if the Federal Reserve really does raise interest rates, and I don`t really think they are going to, but if they do and the oil prices stays at these prices or goes lower, all of the activity in the oil sector for the last past several years turns out to have been a bubble and the layoffs that we are going to get in the short run and the credit losses and the Capex spending declines will be significant enough in the short run to push the U.S. Economy back into recession. I think it is a bigger impact than the bursting of the dot com bubble.

The Longer The Federal Reserve Waits To Raise Rates The More Painful It Will Be

If the Federal Reserve wanted to raise interest rates they would have already done it. Rates have been at zero for about 6 years. Why has the Federal Reserve not raised rates?

The reason Janet Yellen is not raising rates right now is because she does not want to. Because she is afraid of the effect it might have on the economy, on the markets. How is that effect going to be any different if she waits until April or June? It`s not.

In fact, if she is afraid to raise interest rates now, she should be even more afraid to do it in April or June because it will be a bigger bubble by then. The longer the Federal Reserve waits to raise rates the more painful it will be when she does.

The economy is not driven by spending, its driven by savings and production, which we do not have. But you can keep the bubble going with the spending and people do not really make a distinction between a bubble economy and a genuine economy. Just as long as the bubble can keep inflating, that is all everybody really cares about. And the evidence of that is the fact that they are still spending.

A Sharp Oil Reversal

I think this oil decline is temporary. It is a market driven phenomenon, it is technical and again it has to do with the anticipation of a tighter Federal Reserve and a strong dollar. The dollar has strengthened but the Federal Reserve has not tightened and I do not believe it is going to tighten because I think the recovery is a mirage.

And as more people figure this out in 2015, and the dollar trade reverses, I think you are going to see a sharp reversal in oil as well.

The Federal Reserve has been in a box for a long time. The jobs report is not putting it in that box. If the Federal Reserve were to raise rates, all the jobs would disappear because the recovery in only here as long as the Federal Reserve is propping it up. Is Germany Opposing An European QE?

Germany is not just one country. Germany has a lot of weight. And my guess is if the Bundesbank does not want QE, it is not going to happen. It is not like it is going to happen over their objection.

So they are going to have to convince the Germans that QE is necessary and that QE is helpful. And I think that is going to be a very difficult hurdle to overcome.

Falling Oil Prices Are Good For The European Economy

Falling oil prices are a good thing. They are good for the European economy. The only problem is that the low prices are not going to last, I think it is temporary. But the idea that Europe needs inflation is a complete and utter nonsense. Economies benefit from falling prices. Expecting A Weak Holiday Season

Everybody has been talking about how this is going to be a great Christmas shopping season because the recovery is finally here, well, I have been saying for months that I expect a weak holiday season and for now it appears that my hunch is going to prove correct. Because the figures are out for the 4-day holiday weekend. This is traditionally the Thanksgiving weekend that kicks off the Christmas season.

This holiday weekend shoppers had more hours in which to shop than in prior holiday weekends because of the hours that the stores were open on Thanksgiving day. Yet, despite that and despite the big drop in gas prices, instead it was a disaster. Traffic at the malls or at the stores was down over 5 percent. So, 5 percent fewer people showed up to shop over the 4-day weekend. But even worse, the shoppers that showed up did not shop as much because they spent 11 percent less than they spent in 2013.

Crude Oil Collapsing Like In 2009

I think the U.S. Economy is far weaker than the general consensus. I think we are headed into recession too, and that is why you see oil prices collapsing the way they did back in 2009.

But another factor that is exerting more downside pressure on oil is the widespread belief that the Federal Reserve is going to be tightening monetary policy which would even exacerbate the problem in the global economy, and of course the rising dollar that is resulting from the anticipation of higher interest rates, is also forcing oil prices lower.

The Weakness In Crude Oil Is Temporary

I think the weakness in oil is temporary because it is based on, (A) on the global slowdown but (B) on the strength of the dollar which is predicated on the false belief that we have a legitimate U.S. recovery and as such the Federal Reserve can stop doing QE and raise rates, needer of these assumptions is true.

At a minimum you should have 5 to 10 percent of your portfolio in gold. And you may also increase that, you can have gold stocks, depending on your risk tolerance. Are you looking to preserve wealth? Are you looking to get rich with gold? So different people have different needs.

Federal Reserve: They Are Not Going To Raise Rates At All

They are not going to raise rates at all. They are going to do more QE.

They are going to finally raise rates but not because they want to, but because the market gives them no choice, because the dollar is in free fall and inflation is accelerating and the Fed is back into the wall and they have no choice but to raise interest rates and bring about a financial crisis of an order of magnitude greater than 2008.

Gold Will Rise Faster Than It Fell

I think that when this decline is over, it has been 2 or 3 years since gold hit its high around 1900, I think it is actually going to rise faster than it fell. Normally, markets take the stairs up and the elevator down. I think that gold is going to take a rocket ship back up.

Because I think when ultimately people who have been shorting gold and selling gold realize that they got it wrong and they want to buy it back, it is just not there. I think all the real gold, that was dumped out of the ETF, I think it is sitting in vaults in Russia, in China, and it is not going to see the light of day again.

The Reason Oil Prices Are Under Pressure

The only reason that oil prices are under pressure is because the dollar is strengthening based on the idea that the entire world is a disaster, except the United States. And so, the world is going into a recession, everybody is taking refuge in the U.S. Dollar and that is suppressing the price of oil.

I think when people come to the conclusion and again they will come to it, I believe, sometime next year, that we are not only going to be the only country not printing money.  We are going to be printing money, more than all the other the other countries combined.

China Is Not Fighting The Currency War

Interestingly too, the Chinese Yuan hit a 8 month high. So even as the Yen is falling and other currencies like the Euro galling, the Yuan is rising. It is positive on the year by about one to two percent against the U.S. Dollar, which means the Chinese currency is really strong against the Yen or the Euro, because the Dollar as been strong against those currencies, yet it is still dropping against the Chinese currency.

I think the Chinese are discovering that a currency war is not a war that you want to win. And clearly the Chinese are not fighting that. Their currency is rising against other currencies.
